Welcome to the Department of Economics, Government Degree College, Sumbal.

Department of Economics, Government Degree College, Sumbal, is one of the earliest departments of the College. This department started functioning in the same year in which the Degree College was established, that is, in 2010.

The department caters to the needs of undergraduate students of University of Kashmir who are interested to take Economics as one of their subjects at their undergraduate level. In the current academic year, that is, 2017-18, around 200 students are enrolled in this department.

These students very actively participate in extra-curricular activities like presentations, quiz competitions, painting competitions, debates, seminars, awareness programs, sports activities etc being organized by the department and other departments of the college along with their classroom related activities like attending lectures, presentations, assignments etc.

In sync with the syllabus prescribed by University of Kashmir, the courses which are taught in the department include Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Economics of Growth and Development, International Trade and Finance, Mathematical Economics, Statistics, Indian Economy etc.

The department which is one of the 24 departments of the newly established College has a rich collection of more than 500 subject related text and reference books which are housed in the main library of the college. The collection includes the books authored by foreign as well as Indian writers. The books of world renowned authors like Paul Samuelson, Joseph Stiglitz (Nobel Prize winners in Economic Sciences), Hall Varian, the chief economist at Google, Gregory Mankiw, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisors, USA, and many others are present in this collection.

In tune with the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, the department aims at:

  • Providing students opportunities for an in-depth understanding of the subject with its practical applicability.
  • Imparting core area competence to transform students as prospective entrepreneurs.
  • Instilling supernumerary skills to students and exposing them to disciplinary talent.
  • Promoting knowledge, skills, character, confidence, competence and compassion amongst students.
  • Developing all rounded social personalities.
  • Promoting scientific temper among students.
